Love Christmas: A Church Perspective

Love Christmas: A Church Perspective

What is Love Christmas?

Love Christmas is an initiative of Love Your Neighbour and sees churches across the nation coming under one umbrella to bless our local communities, especially those who are struggling or isolated.

The project was born last year in the midst of the pandemic and we here at Hope Church Hounslow were able to bless 400 families with some treats at Christmas time.

We gave older folks in our community a Christmas dinner & calendar; children had toys and gifts, young people had a mental health journal and footballs plus lots of other treats such as Christmas puddings, special biscuits, chocolates and perfume.

This opportunity also brought with it some new partnerships that we have been wanting to make:

with the local women’s refuge, care leavers, those who’ve escaped from domestic violence, asylum seekers, support for local teachers and other community groups.

How did it help?

The response was tremendous! One of our recipients was grateful for a glimmer of hope in the midst of grief:

“I just wanted to say an enormous thank you for the amazing love Christmas box. Thank you also for dropping it off - my father in law unfortunately passed away on Friday, so it has been a difficult weekend. The thought really brought a smile to my face today though and I was so touched that the Church would think of me.”

A grateful recipient

And another appreciated the support after a year of financial difficulty and isolation:

“It has made a huge difference to me given the prospect of a pretty bleak Christmas.

I am a disabled pensioner so things are pretty tight for me given all the restrictions forced upon us with Coronavirus limitations.

I have only been out a dozen or so times this year, my carer does all my shopping etc. I’ve only been to the foodbank twice, but I am amazed at the wonderful people involved in such a well-organised venture. The social interaction is very welcomed. Please, please pass on my well wishes to all involved, you are all lovely people.”

A grateful recipient

So this year we are excited to be getting on board with Love Christmas’ Bags of Kindness!

It’s what the world needs right now – bags of kindness all wrapped up in prayer and the love of Jesus for the broken, the poor and the isolated.

If you would like to get involved in the Love Christmas initiative this year, you can find out all the information you need from the Love Christmas team’s website. And if you’ve already made plans to share a bag or box of kindness this year, don’t forget to register your involvement here so it can be celebrated!
