To Make Jesus Christ Visible

To Make Jesus Christ Visible

02 August 2018 in Practical Intervention.

Asking God where he wants you to get to work is always a risk.

The prayerful enquiring led St Mark’s Teddington to partners in a Tidy-up Day on the estate behind the church.

It was possibly the hottest day of the year but despite the heat between 50-75 people turned out to pick litter, sort out the fly tipping and replant some very tired flower borders.

The idea for an action day came from local residents who were keen to reclaim the local ball park and communal area, and with the help of the police, local community and members of St Mark’s it all came together.

The Metropolitan Police had been involved with anti social behaviour in the local area and proposed a plan to to improve community cohesion through an intergenerational project.

At St Mark’s they’d been praying for ways to put their vision statement into practice ‘To Make Jesus Christ Visible.’

The Vicar of St Mark’s, the Revd Karen Wellman, is a trained as a garden designer so when the local community police officers mentioned a possible gardening project it made sense to get involved.

The church provided the refreshments and eager volunteers, the local CO-OP donated tea and biscuits, the Teddington Society gave money for plants and tools, the Police Cadets brought enthusiasm and stunning bedding plants were donated by Hampton Court. Andy, Nick and Dave from the Met Police worked really hard alongside local residents both old and young with the children taking the lead with the design of the flowerbeds.

It is hoped that this will be the start of a bigger project, there are already ideas being cultivated about starting a veg garden on the estate.

The planing group are meeting in the autumn to think about what we do next. If you are local to the Teddington Area and wanting to get involved, then please do contact Revd. Karen Wellman through the church.
