Energy “Switch Day” Training for churches

Energy “Switch Day” Training for Churches

A one-hour session finding out more about “Energy Switch Days” and how you could run one in your church or community.

Run by the Fair Energy Team, in collaboration with Compassionate Communities, Citizens UK and Tearfund UK.

what is the Fair Energy Campaign? What is a switch day?

The Fair Energy Campaign has been born out of a group of volunteers at St Johns Church in Hoxton.

We were concerned about climate change and reducing our carbon emissions as a church, and aware that many in our congregation, particularly those on low income were paying over the odds for their energy.

With Citizens UK, the Fair Energy team devised simple but effective “Energy Switch Days” at our church. You can read more about our journey here.

These church-run events helped people in our community to switch onto renewable energy tariffs, and reduced the cost of their bills.

Through switching the church to a cheaper, renewable energy tariff, and through these Switch Days, St John’s Hoxton saved £7000 in energy bills, raised almost £2000 in referral fees split between the church and the congregation.

And we’ve saved 80 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

how can I find out more?

Now the Fair Energy Team want to share this learning with other churches.
We would love to see more churches take this simple action: to save money, and act to tackle climate change.

We’re inviting you: Can you do the same and run a Switch Day in 2021 in your church?

We’ve put together all our learning, and produced resources and advice for other churches who want to do the same. This 1 hour session will help you know where to start.

In this session:

  • we will discuss the campaign, and the potential for your church to generate savings, develop lay leadership and win social/environmental justice.
  • We’re asking for churches interested to attend with 2-3 people, ideally a mix of clergy, lay leaders/people

  • By the end of 2021, we hope to have saved:

            - **400 tonnes** of CO2
            - **£50,000** for buildings
            - **£35,000** for families

Come and join us and find out more!
